Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."
During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
